Musculoskeletal ultrasound versus MRI in the detection of fatty degeneration of the rotator cuff muscles.

Fatty degeneration is a detrimental change in the muscles of the rotator cuff and is a negative prognostic factor in rotator cuff surgical reconstruction. Fatty degeneration is a detrimental change in the muscles of the rotator cuff and is a negative prognostic factor in rotator cuff surgical reconstruction.

Research of Wall et al. shows that diagnostic performance of musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSKUS) in identifying and grading fatty degeneration of the rotator cuff muscles was comparable with that of MRI. MSKUS can be used as the primary diagnostic imaging modality for fatty changes in rotator cuff muscles.
