Osteoarthritis of the sternoclavicular (SC) joint, with capsular thickening, is the most common abnormality affecting the SC joint. Musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSKUS) examination reveals marginal osteophytes, capsular thickening, and joint-space narrowing.
The SC joint is an uncommon site for septic arthritis, accounting for only 1% of all joint infections, although it accounts for 17% of septic joint infections in intravenous-drug abusers. MSKUS examination reveals inflammation of the adjacent soft tissue, joint effusion, and sometimes periarticular abscess formation. Osteomyelitis of the chest wall is an uncommon but potentially life-threatening sequela.
