Ultrasound examination of disc displacements in temporomandibular joints
With MRI being used as the reference standard, the added diagnostic value of ultrasound (US) for ruling in and ruling out disc displacements (DDs) in temporomandibular joints (TMJs) is according to Su et al. (2018) sufficient for its use in the decision-making in dental practice. After sufficient training and calibration of operating and interpretation, ultrasound can be considered as a relevant imaging tool to supplement clinical examination in patients with suspected DDs in selected cases. Combined static and dynamic examinations using high-resolution ultrasound should be preferred.
