Joris van Dongen

Hand Surgeon

Dr. Joris van Dongen, MD, PhD is a hand surgeon and regenerative surgeon with a strong focus on minimally invasive and biologically driven therapies. His clinical and scientific work centers on regenerative medicine and surgery, peripheral nerve disorders, and advanced techniques in hand surgery, including ultrasound-guided and arthroscopic procedures.

Dr. van Dongen’s clinical practice is primarily based at Goed Medisch Centrum Breda, where he applies cutting-edge regenerative therapies to treat osteoarthritis and peripheral nerve conditions. A key element of his approach is the use of minimally invasive treatments designed to stimulate the body’s own repair mechanisms and restore function. These include adipose tissue–based therapies, stem cell–derived products, and platelet-rich plasma (PRP), allowing patients to benefit from innovative, tissue-preserving interventions.

In parallel with his clinical work, Dr. van Dongen is actively involved in research in the field of regenerative surgery. He collaborates closely with the University Medical Center Utrecht as a member of the RESTORE group (Regenerative Surgery & Therapy for Optimized Relief of Neuropathic Pain), a joint initiative between Breda and Utrecht focused on improving outcomes for patients with neuropathic pain through regenerative strategies.

Beyond academia and clinical care, Dr. van Dongen is a co-founder and serves as Chief Scientific Officer of Matritech, a university spin-off based at the TU/e Campus Eindhoven within the Smart Biomaterials Consortium. At Matritech, he helps lead the development of advanced regenerative technologies aimed at restoring damaged tissues and peripheral nerves, bridging fundamental science with real-world clinical application.

Through his combined roles as clinician, researcher, and innovator, Dr. van Dongen is dedicated to advancing regenerative and minimally invasive solutions that improve patient outcomes and redefine modern hand and nerve surgery.
