
Interventional Pathologist
Karen Villar Zarra, MD, MIAC is an interventional pathologist at Hospital Universitario del Henares in Madrid, Spain, where she leads the Interventional Pathology Consultation (One-Stop Pathology Clinic). She has been recognized by the College of American Pathologists with the Ultrasound-Guided Fine-Needle Aspiration (USFNA) Certificate since 2015, following completion of the Advanced Practical Pathology Program (AP3) at Englewood Hospital in New Jersey, USA.
Dr. Villar Zarra is the founder and medical director of the Interventional Ultrasound for Pathologists Course, established in Madrid in 2017, and serves as Chair of the Interventional Pathology Working Group of the Spanish Society of Pathology (SEAP). She is also certified in Ultrasound Fundamentals and Musculoskeletal Ultrasound by the POCUS Certification Academy (APCA) and was appointed a POCUS Certification Academy Ambassador in 2021.
An active educator and advocate for innovation in pathology, Dr. Villar Zarra is committed to advancing ultrasound-guided diagnostic techniques through education and international collaboration. She is also a member of the Cytopathology Journal Social Media Team and actively engages with the global pathology community through her educational platforms and social media initiatives.
